A raw screen recording shows everything: the pauses, the wrong click, the mouse hunting for a button. A training video shows one task in steps a viewer can follow. The gap is mostly planning and a little editing.
This guide uses one complete example throughout: adding a product to a quote in Northwind CRM, a made-up CRM. Swap in your own task and system.
1. Plan the task before you record
Write the task as a short list of steps, each starting with a verb. For our example:
- Open the quote
- Add a line item
- Choose the product and quantity
- Save and check the total
Then decide:
- Who it's for. A new sales rep needs more context than an admin.
- Where it starts, for example "signed in, on the Quotes list".
- What data you'll show. Use a demo account or test records where you can, such as quote Q-1042 for an invented company. Less real data on screen means less to blur later.
2. Record and narrate in your own voice
Talk the way you would beside a colleague. In GlideClip, click Create clip on the start screen (Chrome or Edge), tick Record my microphone, then click Choose what to record and pick the Northwind CRM window. You get a 3-second countdown. Use Pause and Resume if you need a breath, and Stop and open in GlideClip when you're done. You can also import a video you recorded elsewhere.
Narration tips:
- Say the step as you start it: "Step 2: add a line item."
- Describe actions, not values. Say "I'll pick the product," not the customer's name or the quote total. Blurring covers what's on screen; anything said aloud stays in the sound.
- Move the mouse slowly and pause after each click.
Fumbled a step? Keep going and redo it; you'll cut the mistake later.
3. Make it safe before you style it
If your recording shows customer data, do this before anything else. Open Make it safe > What to look for, pick who will see the video, list any customer names in Names or words to always blur, and click Prepare video. Then check every item in Review blurs and draw a blur box over anything the scan missed. Small, blurry or fast-scrolling text can be missed, so a person always reviews.
4. Trim and cut
Open Studio > Edit.
- Move the playhead to where the task really starts and click Start here. Do the same at the end with End here.
- For the fumbled click in the middle, click Cut from here at the start of the mistake and …to here at the end. You can also drag across the timeline and choose ✂ Cut.
- Fade through black at each cut is on by default, so cuts don't jump.
The note under Trim shows the new length, including any cards you add.
5. Add numbered step callouts and highlights
This is where a recording becomes a lesson. Open Studio > Callouts.
- Optional: paste your plan into Your script (optional). Lines like "Step 3: Choose the product and quantity" become numbered step cards.
- Click Suggest callouts. The built-in suggestions use your narration, the screen text and your script, and run on your computer for free. With Pro, you can tick AI suggestions, which are drafted from text only, with detected details replaced by [REDACTED].
- Read the list, untick anything you don't want, and click a title to retype it.
Then refine:
- Click a card to open its editor. Give it an Eyebrow like "STEP 3" and a short Title, and add a bullet or two with + Bullet, such as "Quantity defaults to 1".
- Add a highlight with + Highlight (or H) and drag a box around the Add line item button. Tick Dim the rest of the screen while it's up to draw the eye.
- Use a Warning card for anything that trips people up, like "Save before leaving the page".
- Click Preview in the editor to see that part as the final video will show it.
To help viewers keep their place, turn on Segment cards for a title card at each new step, or tick Step bar for viewers in Frame & brand to show "Step 2 of 4" along the bottom.
6. Frame it and brand it
Open Studio > Frame & brand.
- Pick a Frame: Banner, Framed or Studio (framed, with a step list beside the video).
- Type a header eyebrow such as "NORTHWIND CRM TRAINING" and a title such as "Add a product to a quote".
- Open Brand kit to add your logo, font and colors.
Choose the shape above the preview: 16:9, 9:16 or 1:1.
7. Add an intro and outro
In Studio > Intro & outro, tick Intro card, before the recording and pick a template such as How-to: what you'll learn. List the outcome ("Add a product to an existing quote") and what viewers need first ("Sales role, a quote in Draft"). For the end, Next steps + link works well to point to the next video. Cards add time; they never cover the recording.
Then open Studio > Audio and tick Level the voice so quiet and loud parts of your narration sound alike. Standard suits most videos.
8. Add captions
Captions come from the transcript, made on your computer (Suggest callouts creates it, or click Transcribe narration). In Render, tick Captions from the narration and pick Small, Medium or Large. Anything blurred on screen shows as ••• in them; the spoken audio isn't changed.
9. Review, then render
Before rendering, play the whole thing from the start:
- Does each step card appear just before the action, and stay long enough to read?
- Is every blur in place, including during scrolls?
- Did you say anything sensitive aloud? If so, cut it, or record that sentence again with Replace a line in Studio > Audio.
Then click Render in the top bar (or Studio > Render) and Render final video. It's made in your browser as an MP4 and saved where you choose, named after your recording with "(final)". On the free plan, finished videos can be up to 2 minutes, counting the intro, outro and pause cards, with a small GlideClip mark. Pro renders any length without the mark.
Watch the finished file once more in a normal player before you share it.
Try it on a sample
GlideClip includes a 38-second sample recording of a made-up CRM, so you can try callouts, framing and rendering without recording anything first.
